The full size of the roster is unannounced, though IGN previewers noted a total of 24 character slots in the E3 2014 demo selection screen.

Style Variants and Moves

Mortal Kombat X players may choose one of three distinct Variant styles for their character pre-match. These styles influence available moveset, combos, and variables like poison effects. Styles may not be changed on the fly.
Styles also have cosmetic effects on character appearance and movement.

The E3 2014 demo revealed five finishing move slots per character, one more than predecessor Mortal Kombat 9. The nature of the fifth fatality (or other finisher) remains unknown.

Stages

The E3 2014 Demo of Mortal Kombat X included three stages:
  • Outworld Marketplace
  • Dead Woods
  • Kove
Others have been revealed over time since then including:
  • Kuatan Jungle
  • Refugee Camp
  • Destroyed City
  • Crossroads

Animation and Environments

Movement is noticeably more fluid than in previous games, with great attention aid to transitional animation. The game is targeted at 60 FPS.
Background elements are sometimes interactive and may be exploited for attacks.

Story

Very little has been revealed about the MK X story, though developers have revealed it takes place immediately following MK9 and spans as far as 25 years into the future.

A new story trailer was released on February 27th, 2015, showing a glimpse of what the story may contain. This includes Cassie Cage leading a new generation of fighters through the realms, and emphasis on a powerful amulet that captured the fallen Elder God, Shinnok and is now in the hands of Mileena.
